Obi Challenges FG to Reveal Inherited Deficit, Refutes Bankruptcy Claims
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has challenged the Federal Government (FG) to disclose the assets and deficits inherited from the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a series of tweets on Thursday, Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, stated that Nigerians deserve transparency and accountability in governance. He called on the FG to disclose the exact degree of deficit inherited from the previous administration.
Obi’s remarks come in response to recent claims by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and President Bola Tinubu, who asserted that the current administration inherited a bankrupt country.
While acknowledging the existence of liabilities, Obi emphasized the need for full disclosure of assets and deficits inherited from the previous government. He argued that transparency is crucial for the public to understand the current financial situation and hold the government accountable.
Obi pointed to the previous APC government’s similar claims of inheriting a deficit in 2015. However, he highlighted that the debt profile increased from N12.6 trillion in 2015 to N87 trillion in 2023 under the APC’s leadership.
Instead of improving development indices in education, health, poverty eradication, and security, Obi asserted that the previous administration worsened the nation’s condition. He emphasized that Nigerians are aware of the current challenges and seek concrete measures to address them.
Obi’s call for transparency and accountability underscores the importance of responsible governance. By disclosing the inherited financial situation, the FG can foster public trust and enable informed decision-making to improve the nation’s economic well-being.
